A child can sit still and still be working very hard. Holding a body upright, filtering noise, following instructions, and keeping hands busy can take real effort, especially during long school or homework blocks.
That is where brain breaks can help. A brain break is a short pause that gives the body and brain a different kind of input. It might be a burst of movement, a calming stretch, a breathing exercise, or a short heavy-work activity.
This post looks at common OT-inspired movement categories often used when planning brain breaks for kids. I am not an occupational therapist, and this is not medical advice. If a child has sensory processing differences, developmental needs, injuries, dizziness, seizures, pain, or big reactions to movement, a qualified occupational therapist or healthcare professional should guide the plan.
For everyday use, though, these categories can help parents, teachers, and carers choose activities with more purpose than “just run around for a minute”.

What a brain break is really meant to do
A good brain break is short, clear, and matched to the child’s needs in that moment. It should help a child return to the next task with a little more readiness.
Some children need movement because they are sleepy, restless, or under-stimulated. Others need a break because they are overwhelmed and need calming input. The same activity will not suit every child.
For example, star jumps might help one child wake up before reading. For another child, the same star jumps might make it harder to settle. That does not mean the activity is “bad”. It means the category and timing may not be the right fit.
A useful brain break often has three parts:
A clear start
“We are doing ten wall pushes.”
A clear finish
“Then we sit back down and start the next question.”

“Does your body feel ready, too fast, or still tired?”
Most brain breaks only need one to five minutes. Longer breaks can work, but they can also make it harder to return to the task, especially if the child has moved into full play mode.

This type of movement can feel organising for many children. It is often used before sitting tasks, after noisy transitions, or when a child seems wiggly but not necessarily upset.

Vestibular activities use balance and movement through space
The vestibular system is linked to balance and movement. It responds when the head changes position, when the body spins, rocks, swings, tips, jumps, or moves quickly.
Vestibular input can be powerful. Some children love it and seek it out. Others become dizzy, silly, anxious, or unsettled. This is one category where caution matters.
Common vestibular-style brain breaks include:
Gentle rocking
Marching on the spot
Slow spins, only if the child tolerates them well
Log rolls across a mat
Balancing on one foot
Walking along a taped line
Slow forward folds and standing back up

Step-ups on a low, stable step
For many children, linear movement feels more settling than spinning. Linear means forwards and backwards, side to side, or up and down. Spinning can be much more alerting and may leave some children dysregulated.

Sitting still is not passive. It takes core strength, postural control, and endurance. When those systems tire, children may slump, lean, fidget, lie over the table, wrap legs around a chair, or keep getting up.
A brain break that targets the core can help the body reset before a seated task.
Useful core and posture activities include:
Plank holds for a few seconds
Wall sits
Superman pose on the tummy
Curling into a small ball, then stretching out
Slow mountain climbers
Tall kneeling while tossing a soft toy
Walking with a beanbag balanced on the head
Yoga-style poses such as cat-cow or child’s pose
Sitting on the floor back-to-back with another person and gently pushing
These should be short and achievable. A child who finds core work hard may tire quickly. That is fine. Five good seconds of a plank may be more useful than 30 seconds of collapsing and frustration.
For younger children, make it imaginative:
Be a turtle hiding in a shell.
Be a starfish stretching on a rock.
Be a bridge that a toy car drives under.
Be a tall tree in the wind.
The best posture brain breaks do not shame children for moving. They simply give the body a better chance to sit, listen, draw, write, or eat comfortably.
Fine motor and tactile activities wake up the hands
Not every brain break needs big movement. Sometimes the hands need the break most.
Fine motor and tactile activities can help before writing, cutting, dressing, craft, or keyboard use. They can also offer a quieter reset when a child cannot leave their seat.
Try hand-based brain breaks such as:
Play dough squeezing
Finger pushes, with fingertips pressing together
Tearing scrap paper
Crumpling paper into balls
Using clothes pegs
Threading large beads
Rolling a small ball under the palm
Finger stretches
Drawing large shapes in the air
Pressing stickers onto paper
Tactile input means touch input. Some children love messy textures, while others avoid them. If a child dislikes slime, finger paint, sand, or certain fabrics, forcing it can backfire. Offer clean and dry options too, such as paper tearing, pegs, or a fidget toy.
A seated hand break before handwriting might be:
Squeeze play dough ten times.
Roll it into a sausage shape.
Pinch along the length with thumb and finger.

Calming activities help the nervous system slow down
Some children do not need more energy. They need less noise, less speed, and less demand.

Use alerting breaks carefully before tasks that require calm focus. A burst of star jumps may help before a spelling game, but it might be too much right before quiet reading.
A helpful pattern is alert, then organise.
For example:

Choosing a brain break gets easier when the question changes from “What activity should we do?” to “What does this child’s body seem to need?”

Safety matters too. Clear the floor, choose stable surfaces, and avoid activities that involve pushing other children, jumping from furniture, or spinning without limits. Children should be able to stop.
It also helps to use neutral language. Instead of saying, “You’re too hyper,” try, “Your body looks like it needs heavy work.” Instead of, “Sit properly,” try, “Let’s help your body get ready for sitting.”
That small shift protects the child’s dignity. It also teaches body awareness, which is one of the most useful parts of any brain break routine.
The aim is not perfect behaviour. The aim is to give children more ways to notice, reset, and return.
Brain breaks for kids work best when they are purposeful, brief, and kind. Choose a category, try a small activity, watch what happens next, and adjust. If a child’s needs feel complex or the reactions are intense, involve an occupational therapist. OT-inspired ideas can be useful, but individual OT advice is always more valuable than a general list.
